Phillips Distilling Introduces Prairie Organic Vodka

Organic and kosher luxury vodka brand crafted in partnership with a co-op of over 900 farmers

MINNEAPOLIS (May 15, 2008) – Phillips Distilling Company, the fifth-generation, family-owned maker of distilled spirits, announces the release of Prairie Organic Vodka – a beautifully smooth vodka distilled from organic #2 yellow corn and certified both organic and kosher.

“Prairie represents the intersection of a luxury spirit with organic and kosher distillation methods complemented by a profound respect for the people and place that make it possible,” said Dean Phillips, fifth-generation president and CEO of Phillips Distilling Company. “This brand symbolizes a meaningful departure from the business practices of yesterday – from the sharing of success with farmers to converting leftover corncobs to biogas for powering the stills, we are proud to be charting new territory.”

From field to bottle – certified organic and kosher

Prairie Organic Vodka is one of a handful of spirits certified kosher by the Orthodox Union and organic by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) – which requires that the entire process, from the field all the way to the bottle, be completely free of chemical pesticides, herbicides, genetically modified seeds and artificial fertilizers or enzymes.

Kosher (meaning “proper” or “fit”) is not a blessing or prayer, rather a certification that the sources of all ingredients are documented and approved, the distilling and bottling facilities are clean and hygienic, and all equipment has been properly sterilized prior to the production of each batch of vodka. This ensures that everything from the ingredients to distillation to bottling meets kosher standards for purity and cleanliness.

At the heart of kosher certification is the trust that, once approved, the process is adhered to and respected for a lifetime.

The 2007 vintage: Crafted with respect for people and the environment

Prairie Organic Vodka is the result of a unique partnership between a fifth-generation distilled spirits company and a co-op of over 900 Minnesota farmers who are stakeholders in the brand.

Each batch of Prairie is distilled as many times as necessary to yield the desired character and smoothness. The spirit opens with hints of melon and pear on the nose, followed by creaminess on the palate and a bright and smooth finish.

“Prairie Organic Vodka is distilled in limited quantities in the same community in which the corn is raised,” added Phillips. “Benson, Minnesota, may be a small, Midwestern farming community, but connoisseurs will soon recognize it for crafting what may be one the world’s most naturally exquisite spirits– a vodka whose luxury is derived from its simplicity.”

In the spirit of self-reliance, leftover corncobs and other biomass are converted on-site to biogas energy for powering the stills. In addition, the Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS), a co-product of distillation, is returned to farms for reuse as feed. Prairie is packaged in an unfrosted, recyclable glass bottle, packed in a kraft cardboard box produced from sustainable forest wood pulp, employs organic inks on its paper labels and, since it is crafted many thousands of miles closer to home than imported brands, requires significantly less petroleum to bring to market.

The September 2007 harvest yielded enough corn to craft approximately 29,000 cases – which will comprise the entire 2007 vintage.

Prairie Organic Vodka is 40 percent alcohol by volume and carries a suggested retail price of $24.99 (750 mL) and $44.99 (1.75L). Allocations began on May 1, 2008 to California, Illinois, New York, Florida, Texas and Minnesota with national distribution to follow through the summer.
